Major flooding has prompted evacuations, closed highways and canceled classes in eastern
Oregon.According to the National Weather Service, flooding is imminent or ongoing in areas
including Hermiston, Pendleton and La Grande.Small towns near Pendleton, Echo and parts of
Stanfield, were being evacuated on Friday morning. And the East Oregon newspaper had evacuated
parts of Pendleton, the region's largest city, a day earlier.
Many school districts have also canceled Friday classes.Westbound Interstate 84 is closed from the
Idaho Border to the Hermiston area, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation. A
portion of eastbound I-84 is also closed in the Hermiston area.
The trucks are reportedly stuck in water along the highway. Closures are also in effect on other
eastern Oregon highways.
Drivers should not try to drive through standing water. The weather service said that one foot of
water can move most cars off the roads.
