Kentucky High School Athletic Association First State Champion | Bowling


Students entered the hallway at Beechwood High School to greet Haley Noh and Jensen Linder with applause and cheers when they returned from the state bowling tournament in Louisville on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, Noa and Linder won the school's first state bowling championship in the Unified Team Division, in which a bowler with an intellectual disability and a teammate compete together in an alternate frame format.

On Thursday, there were 14 teams in the Unified Team bracket and the Beechwood pair won four matches to win the title. In the final frame of the championship match, Noh rolled three strikes from his wheelchair to a 159–122 win over the doubles team from Beren County.

Based on the points in the qualifying round, Beechwood was ranked No. 5 and Barren County was ranked No. 6 in the single-elimination bracket.

Noah and Linder left the quarterfinals in the semifinals and No. 4 seed Pendleton County in Upset Madison Central, 164-152. The stapler bracket placed among the top four pin totals after the qualifying round to reach the final.Ranley Ulende of Ranley placed fifth in the girls 'singles and Jordan Cole of Highlands placed 10th in the boys' singles to lead the local qualifier of the state qualifier.

The state bowling tournament concludes with a team competition on Friday. The qualifying round will determine the seed for the 16-team single-elimination bracket in both boys and girls. The teams will then compete in single-elimination matches, leading to the finals of the championship.

The boys state qualifiers include Covington Catholic, Simon Kenton and Ryle. The local teams in the girls bracket will be Campbell County, Cooper, Simon Kenton and Conner.

Kovath football player picks up another prestigious award The name of Mr. Kentucky Football on Wednesday by the Associated Press gave Michael Mayer another honor for the impressive high-level football resume of a Covington Catholic senior.


Meyer, who signed a letter of intent with the University of Notre Dame in December, was also named Mr. Kentucky Football by the State Coaches Association and received the Gatorade Kentucky Player of the Year Award. He also played in the Army All-America Game.

As a two-way starter on Kuwait's undefeated state championship football team, Meyer tackled 99 as a linebacker and caught 50 passes for 970 yards and 15 touchdowns. He led the team in all those categories and also scored with a total of 110 points.

In Associated Press All-State voting, Meyer was a first-team selection at both linebacker and wide receiver. He was recruited to play tight end by Notre Dame.Highlands linebacker Brian Huddleston was also a first-team selection on the all-state team. He is an Eastern Michigan recruit who did more than 95 tackles during his senior season.

Walton-Verona senior defensive back Travis Brauer was named second-team all-state. The honorable mention list of vote-getters included quarterback Caleb Jacob and offensive lineman Lucas Jones of Cov Cath, defensive back Kaleal Davis of Newport, defensive lineman Vuk Pavlovic of Simon Kenton and running back Quincy Perrin of Scott.

New Cath will induct eight former athletes into the Hall of Fame Newport Central Catholic will induct eight former athletes into its hall of fame during ceremonies scheduled for 6pm. On Saturday, February 15 in the gym.The women motivators are Shannon Kelley from the class of 2007 and Kela Frypan from the class of 2009. He will be joined by six male motivators - Mike Lally (1977), Rocky Panglow (1980), Rob Sandfoss (1994), Grant Brannon. (1998), Mark Krebs Jr. (2005) and Zac Kirna (2007).

This year’s Team of Distinction will be the 2008 All “A” Classic state champion volleyball team. Vicki Fleissner will receive the Jim Connor Award. Ed Noe and Jack Snodgrass will receive the Fr.
